------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You Gotta Know...?????
Spaghetti Junction- No, it's not a fun family restaurant chain...it's the roller coaster ride you take when you float from I-85 to I-285 and vise-versa.North/South/East/West, whatever, hold on and look in every direction. If you live in Atlanta, this one is good to know! Buckhead-Supposedly, historically speaking, named for the marker at the confluence of trails to early Atlanta (first know as "Ft. Peachtree"[yes], then "Terminus".There are two "Buckheads"...the one "in town" that you can access from Peachtree Road and the one that is about 2 hours away and just a little different.... ...and speaking of "Peachtree": Peachtree Road/Drive/Lane/Industrial/Avenue/South/North/Battle/Alley/Place, etc.You name it, we have a "Peachtree" for it! Don't bother with Google or Mapquest...it isn't much help. Just enjoy the tour, wherever you are! And no, there are no peach orchards left except in a clever gardener's landscape here and there. Your best bet for peaches is a local CSA. www.Georgiaorganics.org The Connector. You will hear this a lot, especially in traffic reports. It supposedly connects I-75/85 at downtown...and it is always under construction! The Perimeter-Think "Peachtree" in as far as location names. It is the outer ring, or bypass of the highway system. "OTP" and "ITP" help you understand where you want to play and buy your real estate. The Hooch-Past connotaions aside, it is the short version of the "Chattahoochee", the river that started all of this and ambles beautifully through the heart of the Atlanta Metro area. Beginning in a secret place in the North Georgia Mountains, it feeds a whopping 70% (UCRC.org) of Atlanta's water supply and much of our recreational needs. Go see it, enjoy it and, most of all, PROTECT IT! http://www.ucriverkeeper.org/
Okay...and I MUST add, "The Big Chicken". If you are anywhere near I-75 North(remember "OTP"?) and Hwy 41 in Marietta, which you will be, trust me, then you will hear "The Big Chicken" referenced. It is the original Atlanta KFC (yes, the Colonel Sanders' one) and it has a giant, google-eyed, moving chicken as it's brand I/D. It is a hoot... and stuff of legends, festivals and Christmas ornaments. Personally, I go right down the road on Power's Ferry to Harry's Farmers Market for my lunch, but will occasionally grab a "half and half" tea at "The Chicken"while I am meeting a vendor or client.
"400"- Avoid it if you can...unless it is before 7 a.m. or after 9 p.m. I know the backroads and use them with fervor! I even go to the "Lakewood 400" antiques market by way of Highway 9 North! |
